UNDP and DDM Strengthen Bangladesh's Emergency Response with Earthquake Preparedness Training

 


The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Department of Disaster Management (DDM) jointly organized a training program on 31st July 2023, at Purbachal, Dhaka, to enhance Bangladesh's emergency response capabilities, with a particular focus on earthquake preparedness. The training was generously financed by the World Bank as part of the ongoing TED (Training, Exercises, and Drills) Program under the Urban Resilience Project (DDM Part).

The primary objective of the training was to strengthen the capacity of different agencies within the Bangladeshi government, enabling them to carry out their roles and responsibilities more effectively in the event of emergency situations, particularly earthquakes. A total of 120 officials from key government bodies participated in the exercise, including representatives from the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief (MoDMR), the Department of Disaster Management (DDM), Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC), Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC), Sylhet City Corporation (SCC), and the Fire Service and Civil Defence (FSCD).

The Multi-Agency Field Training Exercise represented a significant milestone in Bangladesh's continuous endeavor to strengthen its emergency response capabilities. The exercise aimed to improve coordination and preparedness among different government agencies to respond effectively to earthquake disasters.

Md Kamrul Hasan ndc, the Secretary of the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief (MoDMR), attended the training as the chief guest, while Van Nguyen, the Acting Resident Representative of UNDP Bangladesh, and Brigadier General Md. Main Uddin, BSP (BAR), ndc, psc, were the special guests. Additionally, Md. Mijanur Rahman, Director General of the Department of Disaster Management (DDM), and G, M Phil., Director General of the Department of Fire Service and Civil Defence, were also present, along with other senior officials from the Government and UNDP.

"The initiative is very timely and significant, as it helps to fortify Bangladesh's capacity in disasters like earthquakes or any other emergency management," said Md Kamrul Hasan ndc, the Secretary of the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief (MoDMR). He expressed his gratitude to UNDP and the World Bank for implementing the TED program under the Urban Resilience Project (DDM Part).

Van Nguyen, the Acting Resident Representative, UNDP Bangladesh, also conveyed their pride in providing technical support to the Government of Bangladesh for better preparedness and coordinated earthquake response in association with the World Bank.

The comprehensive training program equipped participants with essential knowledge and skills necessary for disaster response, enabling them to efficiently handle emergencies and protect communities effectively. By conducting such initiatives, Bangladesh demonstrates its commitment to safeguarding its citizens and being well-prepared to face potential disasters.

The successful completion of the training marks a significant step towards bolstering Bangladesh's resilience in the face of natural disasters, particularly earthquakes. With the support of international organizations like UNDP and funding from the World Bank, the nation is actively working to strengthen its emergency response capabilities and ensure the safety and well-being of its citizens. The training program reflects the dedication of Bangladesh in becoming a role model for other countries striving for effective disaster management and emergency response systems.
