Embraer and Eve Air Mobility to Manufacture Electric Flying Taxis in Brazil

Brazilian aeronautics company Embraer, along with its urban mobility subsidiary Eve, has announced plans to construct a factory near Sao Paulo to manufacture electric flying taxis, with the first flights expected as early as 2026. The factory, dedicated to producing "electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft" (eVTOL), will be located in the city of Taubate in Sao Paulo state, in commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the birth of Brazilian aviation pioneer Alberto Santos Dumont.

The eVTOLs, resembling small helicopters, will initially be used in taxi fleets, offering passengers a new and futuristic mode of transportation. Sources from the companies indicated that the initial flights will require a pilot, but self-piloted vehicles are envisioned for future rollout. With each eVTOL capable of carrying four to six passengers, these drone-like passenger vehicles are set to provide a novel commuting experience.

Crucially, the eVTOLs will be 100% electric, delivering emissions-free flights and contributing to a cleaner environment. The vehicles are projected to offer affordable flights, with initial costs estimated at around $50 to $100 per person per trip.

Embraer has already secured orders for 2,850 eVTOLs worth approximately $1.5 billion from 28 clients in various countries, including helicopter operators, airlines, and flight-sharing platforms. The company's ambitious foray into the urban air mobility market has garnered significant interest and investment.

Eve Air Mobility, listed on the New York Stock Exchange, has been actively involved in research and development of the eVTOL, but has not yet reported revenues. In the first quarter of 2023, the company recorded a net loss of $25 million, largely attributed to the expenses related to the advancement of the eVTOL technology.

Sao Paulo, renowned for its immense traffic congestion, boasts the largest helicopter fleet globally, making it an ideal location for the introduction of electric flying taxis to alleviate transportation challenges. The companies have expressed their confidence in the potential of the global Urban Air Mobility market and plan to efficiently scale production to meet the growing demands of this exciting and innovative sector.

As the world looks toward the skies for sustainable and efficient modes of transportation, Embraer and Eve Air Mobility's collaboration signals a bold step toward the future of urban air travel. With cutting-edge technology and a commitment to eco-friendly transportation, the electric flying taxis are poised to revolutionize mobility and offer a transformative commuting experience to travelers in the years to come.
