Call for Entries: Seoul Metropolitan Government Launches International Design Competition to Transform Jamsu Bridge into a Pedestrian Oasis

The Seoul Metropolitan Government (SMG) is delighted to announce the commencement of an international design competition, seeking innovative ideas and designs from experts across various fields. The focal point of this visionary competition is the creation of the first-ever pedestrian bridge on the iconic Han River, with the transformation specifically targeting the Jamsu submersible bridge beneath Banpo Bridge. This groundbreaking project aims to establish a new civic leisure and cultural space, offering citizens an unparalleled experience of the majestic Han River.

The Jamsu Bridge, renowned as the shortest and lowest bridge spanning the Han River, boasts excellent accessibility on foot. It shares advantageous features such as a roof and shade with Banpo Bridge. Given its proximity to the water surface, it holds vast potential for metamorphosis into a distinctive civic leisure and cultural space. Participants are encouraged to propose innovative designs and utilization plans for Jamsu Bridge, while thoughtfully considering the hydrological and ecological characteristics of the Han River, the bridge's structural and functional aspects, and the new leisure space it will offer to citizens. Moreover, participants are urged to suggest creative ways to connect the surrounding area with the enchanting water space.

Eligibility for participation is extended to experts in relevant fields such as urban planning, architecture, landscape design, cultural development, and structural engineering. Joint applications, consisting of up to three people, are also welcome.

The Jamsu Bridge area, spanning from 115-5 Banpo-dong, Seocho-gu, to 287-3 Seobinggo-dong, Yongsan-gu, is intended for the exclusive use as a pedestrian bridge. With a length of 795 meters and a width of 18 meters, the bridge presents a captivating canvas for visionary designs that blend seamlessly with the river's surroundings.

The Seoul Metropolitan Government aims to finalize the design cost after the competition, giving participants a chance to showcase their creative prowess without financial constraints.
